Recipe to make flowers last longer

by María Rodríguez Blanco

Normally, the bouquets are accompanied by some "powders" that contain food so that our composition stays fresh longer, but if by any chance, the florist has forgotten to put it in the box, or you have simply cut some flowers from the field or your own garden and want to get the most out of it, here are some tips.

In a container with a little water, squeeze the juice of half a lemon, add a small teaspoon of sugar and mix very well. Once finished, dilute the solution in warm water in a very clean vase and place the flowers previously with the stem cut about two centimeters diagonally.

If the water changes color, smells bad or you notice that your flowers are dull in general, it may be that the water contains bacteria, the best solution is to add a few drops of vodka, vinegar or bleach, that is, disinfectants, to clean the water and that our bouquet recovers. It is very important that you do not go overboard with the amount, since an excess of these substances can be lethal.

In addition, other important steps to follow when preserving our floral center for longer is to keep it as far away as possible from the fruit, since it contains ethylene, which is a substance that speeds up the decomposition process.

On the other hand, keeping your flowers away from direct sunlight, strong air currents and keeping them at a cool and constant temperature will help us enjoy them for longer, lastly, change the water regularly and cut the stem, in addition to keeping the leaves out of the water and remove all those flowers that are decomposed so that they do not contaminate the rest.
